Iceland | March 2023
On the southern side of Iceland, I found myself in an ice cave at the base of a glacier near Jökulsárlón (Yeu-Kul-SaOr-leun) Glacier Lagoon. We had traversed over rocky terrain in a heavy duty off-road vehicle, and hiked about an hour one way to get to this spot. Surrounded by thousands of years of glacial formation, I was in awe of the patterns that the ice created, and the soft blue glow it produced. Our tour guide informed us that this ice is extremely dense at the bottom of the glacier, which allows the ice cave to be structurally sound.
